Homeschool Enrichment Through Outdoor Education
One day each week, students step outside the classroom to learn through nature, traditional skills, games, projects, and community.
Ages 8–16 • Ukiah, CA • Small Cohorts
Black Oak Wilderness School's homeschool program combines outdoor education, traditional skills, natural science, creative projects, and team-building adventures into a weekly learning experience.
Students spend their days exploring local ecosystems, practicing archery, learning firecraft, creating useful handmade projects, playing cooperative games, and developing leadership skills alongside peers.

Our philosophy
People often ask what makes Black Oak Wilderness School different.
The answer is actually pretty simple.
We believe some of life's most important lessons are learned by doing real things in the real world.
A child can read about friction in a book, or they can make a fire. They can read about ecosystems, or they can spend an afternoon following animal tracks through a muddy creek bed. They can learn about teamwork through a worksheet, or they can work with friends to build a shelter before the rain arrives.
Neither approach is wrong. We just believe there is something powerful about learning with your hands, your senses, and your whole body.
The outdoors naturally creates opportunities for curiosity. Kids ask questions because they encounter things they don't understand. They become engaged because the world around them is changing. Every season is different. Every trail is different. Every day brings something unexpected.
We also believe that confidence comes from competence.
Children build confidence when they discover they can do hard things. Not because someone tells them they're capable, but because they experience it themselves. They carve a tool. Hit a target. Start a fire. Cook a meal. Navigate a trail. Help a friend. Solve a problem.
Those experiences stay with them.
At BOWS, our instructors aren't there to provide all the answers. We're there to guide, encourage, challenge, and keep students safe while they discover answers for themselves. We believe children deserve opportunities to take appropriate risks, make mistakes, learn resilience, and experience genuine accomplishment.
Most importantly, we believe people need connection.
Connection to nature.
Connection to community.
Connection to themselves.
In a world that increasingly pulls young people indoors, onto screens, and away from meaningful experiences, we want to create a place where kids can slow down, pay attention, get their hands dirty, and remember that they belong to something bigger than themselves.
That's why we teach outside.
Not because we're trying to escape the modern world.
But because we believe the natural world still has some of the best lessons to offer.
