Foxwalkers

WILDERNESS SKILLS APPRENTICESHIP

Wilderness education all year long...

Foxwalkers is Black Oak Wilderness School's year-long wilderness mentorship program for youth ages 8–12 and teens 13–17 who want to go beyond summer camp and develop real outdoor competence. Meeting weekly with regular weekend field expeditions, students progress through a structured learning path that builds practical survival skills, tracking, firecraft, shelter building, navigation, archery, wilderness first aid, wild foods, carving, natural cordage, campcraft, leadership, and ecological knowledge while advancing through hands-on challenges and long-term projects. More than just learning outdoor skills, Foxwalkers emphasizes confidence, resilience, teamwork, problem-solving, stewardship, and a deep connection to the natural world, helping students become capable, thoughtful, and self-reliant young people through immersive, experiential education in Northern California's forests, rivers, and wild places.

At its heart, Foxwalkers follows the Trackers Guild learning path.

The Trackers Guild focuses on the skills of awareness, firecraft, shelter building, navigation, tracking, archery, hunting ethics, and self-reliance. It is the foundation upon which all other wilderness knowledge is built.

But the goal isn't simply to create skilled survivalists. We use these skills as a pathway to developing resilient, observant, compassionate, and capable young people. As students grow, they naturally explore the other guilds as well, learning woodworking, leatherworking, basketry, camp cooking, wild foods, natural history, storytelling, and many other traditional skills that help them understand not only how to survive outdoors, but how people have lived well on the land for thousands of years.

Tracker's Guild

Our philosophy is simple:

  • As Foxwalkers, we choose awareness over distraction.

  • We care for ourselves, each other, and the land.

  • We give back more than we take.

  • We meet challenges with courage and curiosity.

  • We seek competence through practice and perseverance.

  • We act with compassion and integrity.

  • We leave people and places better than we found them.

  • We honor those who taught us by teaching those who follow.

  • We finish what we begin.
