What kind of person will you become?
Foxwalkers is rooted in the traditions of the Tracker’s Guild — the path of awareness, patience, resilience, and deep connection to the living world. While students learn skills from every guild at Black Oak Wilderness School, the Tracker’s way shapes the heart of the program: moving carefully, observing deeply, supporting the group, and learning to remain calm and capable in unfamiliar situations. More than anything, Foxwalkers teaches students to pay attention — to the land, to each other, and to the kind of person they are becoming.
Foxwalkers is a 9-month wilderness mentorship program combining weekly evening classes with one immersive field weekend each month, giving students consistent practice and real outdoor experience throughout the school year.
Through a progressive multi-year journey, students develop deep competence in firecraft, archery, tracking, shelter building, navigation, tool use, natural history, teamwork, and leadership. Each returning season brings new challenges, more refined skills, greater confidence, and increasing independence in the outdoors.
But Foxwalkers is about more than wilderness skills.
It’s also a place where students build community, shape culture, and begin defining the kind of people they want to become. Long nights around the fire create space for meaningful conversations about struggle, responsibility, friendship, identity, and what it means to grow into adulthood with competence, integrity, and purpose.
