About the event
Black Oak Wilderness School Tracking & Awareness Level One is a full introductory immersion into the ancient art and modern science of tracking. Designed for beginners, this course teaches students how to interpret the signs left behind by animals and people, transforming the outdoors from a place you walk through into a landscape rich with stories, movement, and hidden detail.
We begin with the foundations of print reading—learning how to identify common tracks, recognize basic foot morphology, and distinguish between species through shape, size, pattern, and context. Students are introduced to gait interpretation, exploring how walking, trotting, bounding, and other movement patterns reveal behavior, speed, direction, and intent.
From there, we expand beyond footprints into the wider world of sign. Participants learn to notice and interpret clues such as hair caught on bark or brush, scat and feeding evidence, disturbed soil, crushed vegetation, broken twigs, feathers, drag marks, and subtle environmental…
